Philip Catalano, MD, is board certified in thoracic surgery and cardiovascular surgery and has practiced in Augusta, Georgia for more than 30 years. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he completed his undergraduate training at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Catalano attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina. After completing an internship in pediatrics at The Columbus Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, he completed his residency for both general and thoracic surgery at The Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. There, he completed a residency and chief residency in cardiovascular, thoracic and general surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Catalano specializes in surgical correction of diseases affecting the heart and lungs. He has a special interest in lung cancer and believes in using the most minimally invasive approach possible to remove all cancer during the first surgical procedure. That is why he is the only cardiothoracic surgeon in the region who uses the da Vinci Surgical System for thoracic surgery. His patients have smaller scars and less pain, which leads to a faster recovery.
